The matching table resembles the chair in several respects, most notably in the general method of construction. In terms of size, its height is slightly greater than the distance from the ground up to the seat of the chair, the difference being no more than 38mm (1½in). The table top is square, and composed of slats mounted on a simple framework that bears a close likeness to the construction of the lower part of the chair.

Cutting and Marking Out

To build the table, begin by cutting the four legs to length from 25 × 25mm (1 × 1in) ramin, making sure that the ends are perfectly square. Now cut the four identical top rails to length from 45 × 22mm (1¾ × ⅞in) material. The rails are dowel-jointed to the legs, their inner surfaces being arranged to lie flush so that, when viewed from the outside, the rails are set back by 3mm (⅛in) from the outer edges of the legs. The dowel joints are marked in the usual way with the marking gauge, tape measure and pencil, using two 6mm- (¼in-) diameter dowels per joint as before, but this time set in by 16mm (⅝in) from the edges of the rails. With the top edge of each rail aligning with the top end of each leg, mark the corresponding dowel positions on two adjacent surfaces of all four legs, and bore out the holes with the 6mm- (¼in-) diameter auger bit.
